The enlargement of the calves with silicone implants, or calf augmentation, is usually performed to improve proportions and profile of the legs, for purely aesthetic reasons or to correct a lack of development due to congenital deformities, trauma, or diseases such as polio. It is a popular procedure with non-competitive body builders (calf implants are not allowed in competitions) and women who want more toned legs and thinner-looking ankles.
How it is done
Calf implants can enlarge both the medial (internal) and lateral gastrocnemius muscle, and are inserted through a 4-5 cm incision placed in the crease behind the knee. The procedure takes about one hour, and it is normally performed under general anaesthesia. One night at the hospital is required.
Pain can be significant during the first few days, and usually needs to be treated with pain medication. The day after the procedure it is possible to walk, but generally only with the help of crutches. Compression stocking are needed for 5-6 weeks. After the first two weeks most patients are able to walk moderate distances and perform work activities that do not involve long periods of standing. More intense physical activity can be resumed two months after the operation.
Duration of the result
Several years, but not exactly predictable. The duration of silicone implants for calf augmentation is not known exactly, but it is foreseeable that they will need to be replaced after a certain number of years.
Cost of calf enlargement
The cost of calf enlargement starts from 10,000 KYD. As all the cosmetic surgery procedures are highly personalized, please consider that these prices are guidelines only and may vary for each individual case, depending on the exact procedure needed, the type of anesthesia and the length of the hospital stay.
